Tips to Make a Good Resume or CV
The word CV is an acronym for Curriculum Vitae which is Latin for ‘Course of Life’. It summarizes what an individual has been doing all his life, especially professionally. Our resume is actually a gate pass into our desired organizations and we must take utmost care to prepare it.
We need to realize that our resume is competing with several other resumes of competent applicants and therefore, it is highly important that it stands out. Over the course of many years, experts have developed several resume frameworks. These have been designed to make our lives easy so that we can prepare our CV’s efficiently.
We would like to highlight a few tips as follows:
ACTION WORDS AND ACTIVE VOICE:
Each summary point should start with an action word – a verb. For example, look at the two sentences below:
NOT SO GOOD – The team’s performance increased by 20% under my supervision
GOOD – Supervised the team’s performance and increased it by 20%
Notice the two words in ‘bold formatting’ above- supervised and increased. We should start the bullet point in active voice as compared to a passive voice. This helps in putting emphasis on our actions and directly highlights our job role.
ACTION, RESULT AND CONTEXT:
Each bullet point should necessarily show,
- The action performed by us
- The context in which you perform the action
- The result of the action taken
The above three points beautifully take care of all dimensions of a resume point and one is incomplete without the other two. It is meaningless to talk about great results without any context and our participation in it. It is also meaningless to highlight our actions without specifying the context and the results achieved thereafter.
